Summary

For fans of THE TRAVELLING CAT CHRONICLES and translated by Ginny Tapley Takemori, translator of CONVENIENCE STORE WOMAN, a tender and mesmerizing story about kindness, community and the wonder of life

On the outskirts of Tokyo, in a neighbourhood crossed by a commuter railway, local cats weave their way through the lives and homes of their owners as they navigate difficult times。

A cat named Chobi sends silent messages of courage to a young woman, willing her to end a faltering relationship; a gifted artist fatally misunderstands her boss's enthusiasm for her paintings; a manga fan shuts herself away after the traumatic death of her friend, while her cat Cookie hatches a plan to persuade her outside; a woman who has dedicated her life to a distant husband learns a lesson in independence from her cat。

Against the urban backdrop of humming trains and private woes, SHE AND HER CAT explores the gentle magic of the everyday。 Populated by both the friendly and the feral, it reveals - with heartstopping clarity and warmth - how even in our darkest moments, community and connection may lead us to a happier place。

Anything with cats part of the main plot is an instant hit for me, I'm that basic。But on a serious note, this perfectly depicts the incredible bond one can have with a cat。 Being able to pull someone out of a depressive spiral, give someone strength to deal with their grief, help someone cope with the mundane repetitiveness and loneliness of adulthood, or push through a difficult time, day after day, there's something unexplainable about their companionship。I really was able to connect most with Anything with cats part of the main plot is an instant hit for me, I'm that basic。But on a serious note, this perfectly depicts the incredible bond one can have with a cat。 Being able to pull someone out of a depressive spiral, give someone strength to deal with their grief, help someone cope with the mundane repetitiveness and loneliness of adulthood, or push through a difficult time, day after day, there's something unexplainable about their companionship。I really was able to connect most with Miyu as she appeared to struggle with social anxiety and loneliness/lack of connection in her relationships, to the point she believed herself broken and fell into a depression only Chobi was able to help her out of。 I was in tears reading some of the passages。 It's funny how in each story, she and her cat were able to communicate without words。 。。。more

'She and Her Cat' is one of the most beautiful and emotional books I've ever read。 The book is split into 4 short stories, told from the perspective of women and the cats that they either own or share their time with。 The cats being a great deal of comfort to these women and it's truly wonderful to see their melancholic stories transformed and turned upside down。 An unexpected twist, was that all four stories were connected by multiple characters, which made it even more of a pleasure to read, i 'She and Her Cat' is one of the most beautiful and emotional books I've ever read。 The book is split into 4 short stories, told from the perspective of women and the cats that they either own or share their time with。 The cats being a great deal of comfort to these women and it's truly wonderful to see their melancholic stories transformed and turned upside down。 An unexpected twist, was that all four stories were connected by multiple characters, which made it even more of a pleasure to read, it made the book feel more complete。 The use of language is astounding, it's maturely written whilst also being simple enough to easily get through。 My only worry would be that the translation seems to be slightly scuffed at times。 I would reccomend this book to anybody to enjoys touching and emotional tales, and even more to those who love a happy ending。 。。。more

Tender and delicate, with these words I would describe this book with 4 stories, where the characters are connected through their cats and one dog。The alternating viewpoint of cat and human adds an interesting layer to the book。 We all like to imagine what our cats might think, and somehow I think how it is described here might really be true。 It would certainly be a nice idea。The prose is truly lovely, the way the stories are linked nice。 With a bit more intense tension arc it could have gone t Tender and delicate, with these words I would describe this book with 4 stories, where the characters are connected through their cats and one dog。The alternating viewpoint of cat and human adds an interesting layer to the book。 We all like to imagine what our cats might think, and somehow I think how it is described here might really be true。 It would certainly be a nice idea。The prose is truly lovely, the way the stories are linked nice。 With a bit more intense tension arc it could have gone to 5。 。。。more

This was exactly what I’d hoped it would be; a heartwarming, comforting read。 Every chapter is accompanied by a beautiful drawing of the two new characters (one cat and one person) who’ll be introduced in the following pages。 Every character is interesting in their own way, and their stories were told beautifully。 Because there’s so many characters in such a short space, it does mean it can get confusing - especially since most cats have human names, too。 The perspective switches within chapters This was exactly what I’d hoped it would be; a heartwarming, comforting read。 Every chapter is accompanied by a beautiful drawing of the two new characters (one cat and one person) who’ll be introduced in the following pages。 Every character is interesting in their own way, and their stories were told beautifully。 Because there’s so many characters in such a short space, it does mean it can get confusing - especially since most cats have human names, too。 The perspective switches within chapters, which is marked with a little cat symbol, but sometimes I’d have to re-read a previous segment to figure out if the person speaking was a human or a cat。 The cats themselves aren’t very consistent either。 Sometimes they’re very human, other times they’re clearly animals。 Cats have weddings (?!) and one refers to his owner as his girlfriend (ew), and they understand human speech。 At the same time they don’t understand certain human objects and foods, like cookies, and find it strange when their owner doesn’t understand the need for hunting when they try to teach them。 I think this aspect is what bugged me the most, as it made their funny comments about humans as well as deep philosophies on life as a whole hard to believe。 Still, if you’ve read any other Japanese book about cats, you’ll definitely love this too。 。。。more

All opinions are my own。 。。。more
